Owner Review PrimaLuna EVO 200 Tube Integrated Amplifier!

Mr John Young recently purchased the PrimaLuna EVO 200 Tube Integrated Amplifier and he says the following:

“I am a long-time user of SS amps. I was interested in tube amplification, but they required maintenance that I didn’t have time to explore or execute. Recently, after much research, I wanted in with the tube crowd. Simply put, The sonic response from the EVO 200 woke my Focal 918 to a never-before sound in the 15-years in my rig. The bass response is the most remarkable. It’s as if I added a subwoofer to my system. I will soon upgrade to the Utopia line and am excited for the future using tube amplification. For the first time in PrimaLuna’s history they’ve launched a Hybrid Amplifier, an intriguing adaptation of their ever popular EVO 300 integrated amplifier

The brand new Floyd Edition EVO 300 features a valve based pre-amplifier design and solid state power amp section

In their own words PrimaLuna have set out to “Combine valve and solid-state amplification in a single chassis to capture their inherent qualities – the effusive fluidity of valves, the power and grip of solid-state amplification”

Right from the off there’s a different feel about this amplifier to the “all-valve” PrimaLuna models we know and love. It doesn’t take long to spot the obvious visual differences and I especially love the huge crate housing the transformers, two for the pre-amp and one large 500VA unit dedicated to the power amplification

Initial impressions reveal a fast, weighty sound with the fluidity they desired… We’ll run it over the weekend with their EVO 100 DAC and reserve critical judgement until Tuesday!

Beyond the fact that this test report is an excellent review of our PrimaLuna / FLOYD Design EVO 300 Hybrid, it is also very refreshing to read. Refreshing because it’s not just a repetition of product facts provided by us and larded with the writer’s sauce, but because they make a bit of fun of the “traditional” reviews, trade show demos, etc. Fun to read!
