I know of reviewers who refuse to review (too) expensive cables. Question is: what is too expensive? In fact it is again very simple: if you cannot justify the price, it is too expensive.
I remember that a certain famous amplifier designer and manufacturer was very mad about the fact a company was manufacturing and selling (and connecting) loudspeaker cables as expensive as his power amplifier.
The amp was at that time 25.000 Guilders and the set of 2.5 meters loudspeaker cables was too. He was mad because he realized very well how difficult it was to make HIS amplifier with all those parts, circuitry, metalwork etc. against that more or less standard available good quality cable with some good quality connectors soldered to it. And -as he said- “without knowing what they are doing, they are even changing the character and sound of MY amplifier …”.
I think the amplifier manufacturer was right. His amplifier was expensive, but he could justify the price. The cable manufacturer was expensive, but could not justify the price. By the way … the cable manufacturer is by now a millionaire, the amplifier manufacturer is still manufacturing amplifiers every day, without being a millionaire …
I agree it is difficult to conclude if something is overpriced or not. In the past we were making pure silver cables (CoGelCo). That cable was expensive, but relatively cheap if compared to other pure silver cables in the market. What nobody knew or nobody thought off, was the fact that all the isolation materials (and the hand labor of course) was much more expensive than the pure silver used …
Hello Herman,
Good cable has to be made of good materials and good materials are expensive, nevertheless the profit factor is the biggest problem of the cable sales. For a lot of people, like me, it could be a suggestion to search for used cable. Same quality for less money.
Yes Jan, in certain cases the profitmargin is ridiculous, but not in all cases. And that is where the problem is. How do you know. You know only after many years (like in my case to be honest). This is also the reason why I am so afraid to touch a high end brand of cables for distribution. I have nothing against a high price, as long as … the price can be justified …
