I have listened now for quite some time to both the EVO 300 Tube Integrated amplifier and the EVO 300 Hybrid Integrated Amplifier from PrimaLuna. The EVO 300 Hybrid connects to my Sonus faber Guarneri Evolution speakers. With my Rega P10 turntable and Rega Apollo CD player, this is a very nice combination.
The difference between the EVO 300 Tube and EVO 300 Hybrid, in my opinion, is mainly the power and low-end reproduction. Another advantage is that the EVO 300 Hybrid does not get as hot. Ideal if you have grandchildren like me.
The match with the Sonus faber speakers seems to be a perfect one. The sound is very dynamic, especially when I play old Mobile Fidelity records from Pink Floyd and Supertramp. A feast for the ear. It’s optimal enjoyment, especially in the lows and mids. The voices and polyphony in different styles of music are of unparalleled beauty. It is a fantastic experience to listen to the new releases of Beatles records. Miles Davis’ “Kind of Blue” sounds fantastic and is more powerful with the EVO 300 Hybrid. Since I have a collection of records that varies from Abba to Zappa, it is nice to realize that I can listen to a broader range of music with this amplifier. Before, I used to play less solid rock records. Now that is a different story and Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana sounds fantastic.
Classical music and jazz are also getting more attention. The highs are mostly detailed in semi-acoustic music, and the mids are balanced.
The Japanese pressing of Sympathy for the Devil by the Stones sounds almost like listening to a different song. While listening to layered vocals like CSN&Y or Crowded House, I noticed the sound is deeper and more detailed. In the fantastic blues song Tin Pan Alley by Stevie Ray Vaughn, it strikes me that no matter how high you put the volume, there is no distortion. A real joy! Such a nicely balanced percussion.
The headphone connection is as good, and the refined sound quality with my Bowers & Wilkins PX 7 headphones is worth mentioning.
