The Heart And Soul Of … Kevin Deal – PrimaLuna USA
Recently I saw Kevin’s updated bio (as well as mine) pass by in my waterfall of incoming emails and thought that this could be nice material for our blogs. So, here I start with The Heart And Soul Of … And the first one is Kevin Deal. It also means that the next one is … me. Glad I don’t have to write that one myself :-).
He often shudders at the words but many in the audio industry refer to Kevin Deal as the “Tube Guru”. Unquestionably, he ranks as one of the foremost experts in vacuum tubes so it is little wonder that PrimaLuna’s Herman van den Dungen sought his friend’s advice in designing the company’s first components. Deal brings nearly 30 years of experience to the PrimaLuna team and his counsel—in design and distribution—has proved invaluable.
The track that brought Deal into the world of high fidelity was created by three pivotal events that unfolded before he was ten. Entranced by his neighbor’s oscilloscope, then five-year old Kevin proclaimed he wanted to grow up to be an electronics technician. At nine, he launched his first business venture, buying Hot Wheels directly from Mattel then selling them to his friends for a dollar; even at such a young age, he was providing rare new models, value, and savings to his classmate-customers.
A year later, the sounds of Hendrix, The Doors, and Cream bewitched him to the degree that he dreamed of nothing but music. Three pivotal events that ultimately married technical expertise, business acumen and passion under the umbrella of high fidelity music.
Born in 1958, Deal’s formal introduction to audio occurred when he was 18 and began selling for Mission Electronics. Two years later, he stepped up to store manager for Cal Stereo. He then shifted to the Federated Group during their hi-end heyday before finally landing at Rogersound Labs, where his “tube epiphany” occurred. “I realized that my shoulders dropped and my head grooved whenever I listened to tube gear, so I started experimenting,” Deal recalls. “I was obsessed with how two similar tubes could create such a vastly different sound and I set out to learn everything I could.”
Deal studied intensely, digesting not only the internal construction of tubes but their history as well. He scoured shops for the unusual, curious as to how they would sound. During one of his overseas hunts, he came across a massive cache of rare, highly-sought tubes and borrowed against every credit card he had to buy them. With the profits, Deal launched Upscale Audio in 1994, providing primarily tube upgrades while selling a select group of prestigious product lines. By the end of the decade, Deal had built Upscale Audio into one of the premier retail establishments in the country.
A year later, Deal was approached by van den Dungen (the premier audio entrepreneur in Europe), seeking advice on designing and distributing a new line of tubed audio components. Sharing similar business philosophies (exceptional design, value and customer service), Deal assisted in the creation of PrimaLuna and assumed North American distribution. PrimaLuna’s first offering, the ProLogue Series, was an immediate success with consumers and critics across the globe.
Spurred by that initial triumph, PrimaLuna, has methodically scaled up their product lines, each garnering greater praise and more awards than one can count. With superb construction, incredible sound, aggressive marketing, an infinitesimal defect rate, and a price point that attracts audiophiles and those new to high-end, PrimaLuna has become the David to the industry’s Goliaths.
Deal maintains his love of tubes and scours the hinterlands of Europe and Asia for those rare finds. But his time is occupied primarily by his two businesses and their success reinforces Deal’s reputation as one high-end audio’s most notable figures.
EXCEL … Qui Veniamo! Passion, Ambition, Competition. Or maybe not …?
Are we glad or sad to see our high-end audio business go in a total different direction …? In the good direction? Or the wrong direction?
“Good morning! I wanted to come to visit you in 2 weeks.”
“But we have met 3 weeks ago. Why you want to visit?”
“Want to discuss your new order.”
“Which new order? I have everything in every color in stock.”
“According to my Excel files you are behind.”
“Behind what?”
“Behind what you should have ordered by now compared to last year.”
“But I have enough stock of everything. Every model. Every color.”
“Sorry. I checked your contract and the agreed forecast. I come in 2 weeks.”
“Hallo. How are you? Everything OK with you and your business? Let me also show you the new models we are going to add to the line .”
“New models? But the dealers and consumers already don’t understand the range anymore and we cannot stock more models and colors.”
“We need more sales, more turnover. Find new dealers. Add MediaMarket, Saturn, whatever. You can become rich.”
“I am rich enough. This will only make me lose credibility, money and clients”.
“Sorry. We need turnover. And you want to get our other brands, no? Or do you want to lose this brand? According to Excel I need order now of € 60,000.-.“
“Sorry, but I have a full warehouse. Everything sufficient in stock.”
“Sorry, I can only return if I have your confirmed order.”
“But …”
“Sorry.”
“OK, but what you want me to order? I have ….”
“Not important, as long as I can return with your signed order for € 60,000.-.”
“OK, get me 5 pairs of these, 5 pairs of those and 1 pair of that. Must be around € 60,000.-.”
“Thank you! Can you sign here for confirmation? Thanks!”
“But, but what I am going to do with this? My warehouse is full. You saw it yourself”.
“Sorry, not my problem. I did my job. I sold what I had to sell according to the Excel plan. Now it is your turn to sell it to your dealers. Your job. Use your passion, play your ambition, beat your competition. Nice to have seen you. See you soon again. Excel rules …”
So … It’s wrong to use Excel? No not at all. As long as you use it the right way. That’s how WE (want to) use it and that’s the good news of today!

High End Design(ers) – The(ir) Desire To be Perfect …
In the past I just thought that being an architect, a designer was a wonderful and easy job. You have an idea, you go to bed, dream during the night and wake up with the best idea ever. Not! It’s often a job as hard (or harder) than any other job.
I noticed during the years that several audio designers were people that originally had another job. But often a job in which they also had to be very accurate. So accurate they could make other people crazy. Same could often be said also from some of the most extreme high end audio customers.
Think of dentists, dental technicians, architects, often motorcyclists. Not to forget teachers. Also quite a few doctors, although mainly “almost” doctors. All people that are extremely demanding, probably extremely precise.
They are the same if they go designing high end equipment, they are the same if they go enjoying high end audio as their hobby. They are searching for the holy grail of audio perfection. Easy? Not at all. Not for themselves. Not for the people around them. Perfectionism can make some people forget being happy and at peace. Can make it impossible for some people to be an imperfect person in an imperfect world.

So … accept that many of us are perfectionists, accept that all these perfectionists still fail one way or another at a certain day or a certain point, accept that the perfect high end audio system will never exist, and also accept that even how important this all is for you, it is insignificant for many, many people, even if they love music. Be happy!
