The Pirates of Audio from the Past … and Today?

audiopiratesIf it is the correct name I don’t know but it came up during the work I was doing last evening, so let it be Pirates.

In a discussion with a dealer this evening, his reaction on a certain issue was: don’t excite yourself, just accept it and go on with other things. I was a little amazed, especially as I decided during last few weeks that I did NOT intend to accept certain things anymore and that I was going (to fight) for it. Also because the company / person I was more than tired of, had been bothering me now on and off almost more than 35 years one way or another. Has this business become so strange that you indeed have to accept what others do with your work? Not this time. So listen to a story coming from “the old box”.

tt6One of the most amazing things from the past was the following: I was visiting CES on Chicago I believe and in one of the rooms I noticed something simple. Small aluminium cones. Oh. Special? It seems so, as there was a lot of talk about. While looking at it, asking for the price, I thought about the machine we had at home to turn … aluminium parts. So immediately I thought “why bringing aluminium from USA to The Netherlands”? I kept the idea in my head and worked out a same kind of product, with the same function, but different looks ánd some add-on mounting. Another product …

Back home I discussed with my hobby friends and we came up with different models, made drawings and started to turn aluminium discs out of solid aluminium bars. Lot of work, many evenins and nights at work till 3 in the morning. We sold these parts quite good, packed them for the dealers  with a nice label on it, printed the dealer’s name on it etc. But we had to give the products a name. I remember I was in Nijmegen at a dealer and was discussing about a name. The brandname of the product that inspired me was TipToes. Excellent name. Good sound, good meaning. I was walking in the shop and said to Joop: it has to have a same tonal character. T, T, P, P and suddenly out of nothing the name PinPoints fell out of my mouth, and that was the name to be.pinpoint

So, at home we made drawings, filled in the paperwork to register the brandname and paid the charges to register. Only when the charges were paid  the brandname was considered to be registered. :-).

advocaat

Few days later … a registered letter from a lawyer … Forbidding us to continue to produce and sell copies of the TipToes for which the model and the brandname was registered at the BeNeLux Brand Office etc etc etc. We looked at it, smiled and went on. Our model was different, used another name, had extra facilities to attach it with a screw to speaker or turntable. No worries. moneyBut we were curious and we checked at the BeNeLux Brand Office for the name TipToes. No not registered. But we have seen an official paper saying that … Checking again … Ah … yes the registration form was filled in, but the charges were never paid, so there is no registration … All clear.

Many, many years later I met Steve, the guye who invented these cones and I said: You must have sold of lot of these in The Netherlands. He looked to me with big eys and said: The Netherlands was the country I never ever sold 1 TipToe …

counterfeit

In America my friends of Sumiko noticed we were making PinPoints and as they thought they could sell a product like that they asked me to make these under their own brand name. That name was as original as the other 2 names. In English an illegal copy is called “counterfeit”. You pronounce this as “Counterfeet”. And that became Sumiko’s new brandname.

In the meantime we had a mold made so instead of turning out of solid bars we got the PinPoints readily shaped and we only needed to thread and polish them. Many evenings and nights we were polishing and packing these PinPoints and Counterfeet. My brother run the polishing “department”. My sister, my wife packed them. My brother still dreams about it. 🙂

tt2During the same period another distributor, in fact the one who was selling these PinPoints for me in The Netherlands (we have never been serious roadrats) came up with an alternative “PinPoint”. A cone used to grind sharp aluminium products. One big advantage: these cones you could buy in big bags and were costing nothing. When I saw the cones, I said Ahhh this is what we use to grind those and those parts. My collegue distributor looked at me, smiled and decided to continue to sell our aluminium Pinpoints.

While typing this story I have been smiling frequently so I think I can accept it as a good news item! And Good News is what I promised you for every day in 2014!

CES 2013 Discussions – CES 2014 Pictures from PrimaLuna USA

CES 2013 discussions (translated from Italian): “I don’t understand why these PrimaLuna  rooms have always such good sound in their demo’s. These speakers sound so much better here. And their rooms are always full of people. People who seems to stay longer with them than with us. Maybe our rooms are too big?”

I don’t think the Italians realized we were understanding more than Dutch and English. While they talk we smile and “recorded” their words. 🙂

Rules, rules, rules … CE rules!

rules2I am kind of a “provo” from the Sixties. That also means I hate rules from “above”. Did you ever look up to see the faces  from those looking down on you and making the rules …. Bèèèèhhhh, what an annoying shit! I was thinking of that while having an “in-flight” discussion with  ex-stewardess Ayse Yurga. Rules are KILLING. At least for me.

She is from Ankara, Turkey. The same country Adnan and Eda Arduman are coming from. People I love so much, I cannot express. Two years ago we spent a holiday together with them sailing on a boat. With friends and family from USA, Holland and France.de boot Captain Birol and family if I am right. Best weather, food, drinks, all what we wanted. We had a greatest time! Will never forget. Specially while I could keep email contact with the full world through my Turkish USB stick. Thát was a part of the deal. I come, but … Thanks Eda!

logo250timpaniAdnan was doing a very good job for PrimaLuna in Turkey. Initially we had all models CE tested and certified. Very expensive. And nowhere, anyone, asked for it. So for newer models we decided NOT to go for the CE certification and instead to make our own CE statement. Which is 100% legal by the way. Then Turkish government decided for change of CE rules and to accept only official CE Certificates. So we could not export any new PrimaLuna models to Turkey … :-(. Big shit. Just because of a few documents. I know that companies like Audio Research were “photoshopping” documents to get their stuff in, but we did not want to run that risk. So for some time, PrimaLuna was “quiet” in Turkey.

ce markThen we got the good news that rules were changing again in Turkey (let’s look  UP again all of us) :-(. And everything could be imported again the more or less normal way. Like in Europe. In the meantime however we decided to have all models CE certified for a “modest” amount of US $ 25,000.- as also Taiwain, Vietnam were asking for the Certificates (in fact the countries which wanted to protect their local manufacturing). OK, back to business in Turkey again! :-).

audiofastThis week we shipped a container direct from China into Poland. At least we tried. Poland is Europe! Not for CE! So all goods were shipped without the CE Certificates … Can you imagine how shit you can feel all about this? Rules, rules, rules. Last year we have spent € 25,000.- to get the CE Approval for all new models. Nobody ever asked for it. Nobody needed it. Untill today in Poland. What a luck these certifcates can fly the digital way. Good luck Jarek, good luck with the rules, rules, rules … Good we did that official CE Certification again last year! Up to the next!

Good Things From The Past Are Coming Back!

In the past we had a great time developing and designing all kind of things related to our biggest hobby: music and hifi. Once we were touched by this virus, it was impossible to stop us. Nice experiences and products were the result.

I remember we were making one of the first recordweights. Starting off with a solid aluminium disc, soon we were experimenting with lead. Melting in the “wok” did not work, so soon we were “cooking” lead in the kitchen in another saucepan. Not realizing the risk we were running with melting lead. Well, audiophiles seem to be a strong race, as we still are around. Instead of a solid aluminium disc we got an aluminium can filled with lead. Did we sell them? I don’t believe so as I still see these around in the offices to keep paperwork protected against the wind.

After that we came up with Kiseki phonocartridges, PinPoints, Audiophile Products record clamps, record mats, tone-arms, electrostatic elements etc etc.

Today I am excited and happy to write down that several of the tools we were using by then, have found a new place in our warehouse. So we can again experiment to bring up new ideas, prototypes, products. Keep an eye on us and enjoy how much we enjoy.
