Shakti Electro-Magnetic Stabilizer Stone

Ben Piazza’s Shakti Stones employ “proprietary noise reduction circuitry to absorb and dissipate electromagnetic interference (EMI) and radio frequency interference (RFI).” In other words, nobody’s quite sure how they work, but work they do when placed over the transformers of amps, preamps, and other electronics, reducing noise and enriching timbre. JV, Issue 188

Shakti Hallographs

Master of the inexplicable, Shakti’s Ben Piazza has followed up on his magic “Shakti stones” with yet another impossibleto- explain-but-effective-asclaimed item, the Hallographs. With direct-radiating or omni speakers, these large, rotatable, free-standing, tuning-forkshaped items work some kind of voodoo when placed in the corners of a room (behind the speakers), masking chaotic wall reflections and “clarifying” the soundfield (just as Shakti says they do). Have your sights set on a romantic tube stereo power amplifier? This 60Wpc design is it! Tonal emphasis is squarely on the lower midrange. Timbres and textures are slightly liquid and warm—highly complimentary to violin. The treble range is laid-back. Count on a mellow, relaxed presentation with an exceptionally low listenerfatigue factor and plenty of imaging magic.

Category Preamplifier

Conrad Johnson ET3

Despite its entry-level status, the ET-2 is a low-distortion, high-resolution line preamplifier that delivers timbral accuracy and phenomenal bass control. The overall presentation is clean, smooth, slightly laidback, yet highly detailed, with an emphasis on harmonic accuracy. It can certainly hold its own in elitist company. The optional phonostage can also be confidently recommended.

Mystere CA21

Built like a tank, the CA21 is a fine example of the minimalist approach: a line preamp with an input selector (four line inputs) and a volume control, but no balance control. Stock tubes are Chinese 6SN7s. Substitution of NOS 7N7 or 7AF7 Loktals yields smoother textures and more palpable images. A giant killer in clarity, soundstage transparency, and detail resolution. A slightly closed-in treble range highlights the midrange. Tonally, the center of gravity is centered in the lower midrange, enabling a bigtone portrayal of cello and upright bass.
