Stereophile magazine recommends M2Tech Young DSD

M2Tech YoungM2Tech Young DSD

Stereophile reports: Elegant and modern in appearance, the M2Tech Young is a DC-powered D/A processor with a simple aluminum case, a recessed front panel, and a large alphanumeric display. It uses a Burr-Brown PCM1795 DAC chip with a custom oversampling minimum-phase filter.

It handles resolutions up to 32 bits via USB (24 bits via S/PDIF or AES/EBU), and sample rates up to 384kHz via USB (192kHz via S/PDIF or AES/EBU). While the Young lacked some accuracy and precision, it nevertheless managed an excellent balance of detail and warmth, said JI. The Palmer Power Station battery power supply, designed to match the Young, provides two 15V outputs. Adding the Palmer resulted in significantly more focus and clarity. “The M2Tech combo seduced me,” JI concluded. Current version will decode DSD128.

Stereophile magazine recommends the Playback Designs MPS-5 Reference

Playback Designs MPS-5 ReferencePlayback Designs MPS-5 Reference Designed by Sony and Studer alum Andreas Koch and made in the US, the MPS-5 is a slim, single-box, fixed-output, two-channel SACD/CD player, upgradeable to multichannel by adding Playback Designs‘ outboard MPD-5 DAC. Its digital input/output section is carried in the chassis’s upper section, while the lower section houses a modified TEAC Esoteric SACD/CD transport and the player’s analog output circuitry. The MPS-5 includes Playback Designs’ Frequency Arrival System, said to completely eliminate jitter from the audio signal. Once broken in, the MPS-5 produced a “masterfully neutral top-to-bottom tonal balance” with well-extended bass and open, airy highs, said MF. Compared to the dCS Scarlatti, the MPS-5 sounded “somewhat cooler and more analytical,” but offered slightly better transparency and three-dimensionality. Although JA found the MPS-5’s error correction “astounding,” he was puzzled by its relatively high levels of background noise which appeared to reduce the player’s intrinsic resolution on SACD closer to that typical of CD. Compared to the Marantz SA-KI-Pearl, the MPS-5 sounded, to MF, “faster, tighter, more resolving, better extended, and more expressive, particularly on the bottom.” The MPS-5 traded the delicacy, richness, and atmospherics of the Ayre DX-5 for greater dynamics, blacker backgrounds, and more three-dimensionality, said MF. Compared with the Simaudio Moon Evolution 650D, the MPS-5 had similarly sharp transient attack but lacked clarity, texture, bass control, and focus, felt MF. 2012 producion has USB-X to handle DSD datastreams.

Happy Birthday Diana Ross!

Diana RossI noticed that Diana Ross was born on March 26, sometime long ago and had to smile. This weekend I had a loudspeaker and phono-cartridge design weekend and we were talking about reading LP’s the way it
should be done in 2014. With a laser. My discussion partner said that this already existed and of course he came up with the name of the –now Japanese- ELP Laser turntable. This USA born and designed idea / product has been around for many years, was subject of many not successful stories, heavy investments (I guess) and finally ended up as being (still) produced in Japan. If you Google it you can find all the info you want and even the enthusiastic Japanese owner of the company shows you around in a YouTube movie. My very well organized discussion partner walked to one of his “documentation rooms” and came back with an original brochure ánd manual of the turntable :-).

I smiled and amazed him by telling him that in my archives I still had a contract for being the distributor in The Netherlands or BeNeLux for this ELP turntable. But I believe almost every distributor at that time in The Netherlands had such a contract. We were all lucky the company at that time never supplied any product … pfff.

ELP draaitafel

One day in January 19-I don’t know which year, a number of international high-end distributors were invited to see and hear the turntable. The US designer / manufacturer rented a villa in Las Vegas which was said to be owned by … right, Diana Ross. How exciting. So we were driving with our invitation direction the given address. Of course the area could only be entered after being checked at the entrance and after that we passed the streets with, what I remember, beautiful houses. Did not expect anything else of course. One thing I will never forget and that was a big house with the owner in front of it, cleaning his antique Bugatti :-). Never saw that in the streets I have been living in.

Anyway, finally we arrived at Diana’s place. She did NOT open the door! She was not even there :-(. But the idea was exciting. We saw and heard the ELP turntable. I don’t even know if the sound impressed me or not. I just remember it was a hassle before an even clean-looking new LP could be played. But … it worked in the sense of making sound. By the time we had to go I decided to leave my “traces” for Diana. I took my business card and put it under the tablecloth of the coffee table. Maybe she was going to call me :-).  Well, I am still waiting … Happy Birthday Diana!!
