The Never Ever Having Enough Manufacturer …

dollar_sign_smiley_blog1You might think I have huge problems with investors. No. Basically I have problems with nobody. Unless the situation creates problems. I see a clear and correct function for investors. Also in High End. But in a correct way, not the Monopoly way.

However before going to sleep I want to write about a High End manufacturer who is famous for never ever having enough. Just read on.

bizthreatI remember we started representation of him, his brand and his products in BeNeLux. Of course it takes some time before you see any actual results, but when finally the first sale was made, both the dealer and I were very happy. You don’t sell every day a preamplifier of (at that time) 35,000 Dutch Guilders. We were happy, we were proud. So instead of sending a fax (at that time) to order the preamplifier, I decided to call him to tell him about our first order for his (very expensive) product. I expected a very pleasant discussion with “Thank you, very much appreciated etc, etc”. Well to make a long story short … within 15 minutes we had a large fight on the telephone. “How could we sell only a preamplifier, how could we not sell a set of mono amplifiers in the same deal. We had Rembrandt, we had van Gogh, we were a rich country, with rich people …” At that moment I regretted so much that I ever started with that brand and I wished we hadn’t sold that preamplifier.

helpmeThe manufacturer, or at least the person, is still around. Had a range of bankrupts and still succeeds to find every time someone who invests money in his projects. He even sometimes calls me to ask if I am interested in … No, the answer is always No! No! No!

A little joke going with this person … How to become a Millionaire? Start working with this guy as a Multi-Millionaire … Good night!

Good Morning “Olanda”!

olandaOk, back home again. Back to normal. Well, “normal” does not exist in our daily life. At least not often. And if it looks like “normal” we are specialists to find something to make it “not normal”.

We are starting now a new period in our high-end life. A very exciting new period. New, not because it is “un-done” before, but new because it is larger than before. As before it is triggered because of a change in a situation which -to say it as friendly as possible- is not liked by us. To understand better, we explain a bit.

High End audio brands often start off as a one-man or a one-family size organization. If the (wo)man or the family brings something good enough to be noticed in the market, dealers and distributors become part of their business and often the organization grows due to the promotional work of dealers and distributors. Absolutely nothing wrong with this and a fully natural process. We have done that and are still doing that for already almost 40 years. Think of brands like Krell, Koetsu, Apogee, Sonus faber,  D’Agostino, Wilson Audio, Transparent, Cello and many others. The manufacturers, their families became our friends and business partners. Unfortunately sometimes circumstances do change during that period of growth. Manufacturers become wealthy, which isn’t a problem as long as they do not fall into the “hole” of never wealthy enough. Or they fall in hands of an investor, which isn’t a problem as long as the investor is a person or organization with passion for music and equipment and prepared to accept only a role as partner to make natural growth possible.

moneyHélas … if a dime becomes a quarter, it often seems difficult to live with the new and better circumstances of life. Investors rarely come with passion for music and equipment. In both cases it means that companies change more and more into turnover driven money-making-machines where the most important tools are Excel, pressure, threatening, lies and everything you can think of that makes life no longer “pleasant”. It’s no longer “music for pleasure”, it’s (only) “music for money”! Don’t misunderstand me. I LOVE making money. And I LOVE enjoying it. BUT … the “normal” way, which often means by “many hours of hard work”.

During the next few days I will give some examples that come in mind when thinking about what I just wrote and after that I will start to describe what’s the new project we are facing and working on. More than exciting and something I never thought was going to happen during my high-end life, but God (and some stupid investors) decided differently. I hope that soon I can say “Thank You Lord”, “Thank you “stupidi investitori” …

Good Morning Italia Part 2

Good Morning! And Yes, it was also a very short stay in Roma. Just to recover from 1 week of hard work in China. Eat, drink, look around. Roma, bataceautiful city. While having a great lunch on a trottoir in the sun, I noticed that every tram passing by has the word “atac” on it … Well, what to think of that? That I have a secret supporter in Roma or Italia to keep me awake? Don’t think so, but it was a nice surprise. Like the taxi driver yesterday who drove us around (now we know we can walk that same distance in 10 minutes …), was singing upon hearing me say “Vera Musica”. Today return to Ollanda, with a bag full of news (or maybe only rumours) about my not so favorite anymore Italian companies … To be continued. Good night everybody!

Good Morning Italia Part 1

italianfingerprint

Good Morning! Yes, it was only a very short stay in Holland. Unpack and repack the luggage. Check out the just finished 49 Kiseki PurpleHeart N.O.S. cartridges, do some shopping. Make some China related notes and then, off to Eindhoven Airport for Italia on the go. Italia … One weekend de luxe after one week of hard work. Strange to say that, as I never had the idea I have to work hard. But last week, with every night only 2-3 hours of sleep was tough. I am curious to know if working hard brings more results than relaxed working. The projects we are going to start or have expanded make me think so. Italia … Of course the taxi driver wanted to know about Ollanda. Football? No, no football. Musica! Vera Musica! And you know what? He knew already about “Vera Musica”. “Bella. Bella” he reacted and started to sing for us :-). The new Rome Life Hotel is very nice. But … what we are used to in China and did not get there this time, we got in Roma … No more electricity … Italia … Oh Italia. Country of Vera Musica and Famiglia Difficile. China in Europe …
