En plus d’avoir un oeil qui traîne dans le service après-ventes, je suis aussi “le passage obligé”pour toutes les conceptions concernant nos propres produits. Pour le look, mais aussi pour l’électronique. Nous travaillons avec plusieurs personnes et ma fonction est de réunir ce dont ils ont besoin pour réaliser la gamme de produits. Je déteste lorsqu’ils re-invente à nouveau “la roue” et le marteau. Tout le monde est la plupart du temps d’accord avec moi et quelquefois on se dit “mais cette partie de la conception nous l’avons déjà sur une étagère”. Ensuite, bien entendu, on réalise qu’un designer a toujours un regard différent que son collègue. Et alors je pense “So be it”.

Aussi je me rends compte que la fonction CC des emails amène toute sorte de questions et réponses. Et cela me permet à nouveau la possibilité de penser à ce dont nous avons besoin et d’ajouter mon grain de sel et aussi de comprendre mieux le designer. La semaine dernière, la discussion était entre le distributeur BOW aux USA (qui attend avec impatience les nouveaux produits) et Lars Moltke (le designer de Bow “d’avant” et le designer de Bow “d’aujourd’hui et demain”). Le distributeur voulait savoir la préférence de Lars pour les firewire ou les usb. La réaction de Lars, bien entendu, était passionnée comme toutes les réactions de designer. Certainement cela vous amusera aussi de suivre cette discussion et de réagir…

Hello Lars & Herman, 

I was visiting a dealer last week who made an interesting comment and I would like your thoughts. He believed that “Firewire” connections will become the standard for High resolution computer audio.

1. 1.       Lars, do you have any experience or thoughts on Firewire and if it offers higher resolution than USB connection?

Other thoughts/questions:

 1.2.       The BB-1702 is a 20-bit chip – can it fully process 24/192 Hi-rez FLAC files?

1. 3.       Has the BB-1702 been replaced by BB PCM-1795  (32-bit, 123db dynamic range)?

Please take the following part with a grain of salt, and let me be excused because I’ve a passion.

This is my own opinion and my lonely fight as a stupid engineer against sales people 😉

1. 1.       Five 5 years ago – Yes. The firewire is a dying interface. The USB has overtaken the serial communication, and is now quicker than firewire. The firewire started as being the quickest serial interface, specially designed for cameras and VCR’s because they have to import big mass of data. Nobody use firewire anymore. By the way, Firewire is a nice word … *S*

 1.2.        R2R D/A converters is unfortunately also a dying part. Please memorize the AD1852, the famous PCM63, etc. etc. Then the Japanese destroyed everything by introducing 24 bit converters. – Please have in mind. EVERY CD disc is 16BIT!!! 

1. Compared to the real world it’s like sailing in a boat. The deplacement of the water is 1m below the surface. And that the water then is 100 or 1000 meter deep doesn’t matter. What matters is the type of boat. Is it a bad one, or is it a high performance Jaguar look-a-like with 1200 hp.Please read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audio_bit_depth
   16 bit = 96dB – lower than the PSRR / CMRR – power noise. What do people want with lower than -96dB? Nothing. People don’t ask about the sound quality of the converters. They are just looking at 384KHz/32 bit …Please compare the price. It tells all. The PCM1795 (US $ 5 for a stereo solution) is a cheap lousy, bad, one bit stereo converter with charge pump for making the negative supply voltage, and is including a digital oversampling filter with bad impulse response + nice to have volume.Compare to the REAL R2R MONO PCM1702 (US $ 40 for mono) – with +/- 5V separate digital and analogue supply. And now it is not recommended anymore for new design and it is going obsolete :-(.To tell people about this, should be the HI END salesmen’s job.I’ve taken my time to compare these damn converters – using the same digital interface – power supplies etc. My conclusion: one bit converters are not good. But … I have not been going through all of them.I’ll be happy to send you my latest converter design, the ZZ-8 MRK III Upgrade. Use it for test and see if you like it.
